Williamsburg, Virginia - a genteel step back in time

After driving from Richmond, Virginia - we arrived in Williamsburg. The same way I felt about Burlington, Vermont (in a previous blog post), I instantly felt a feeling of 'home' as we arrived in Williamsburg.

We spent the majority of our time in Colonial Williamsburg as we found it fascinating to wander through the beautiful buildings and really feel like we had stepped back in time. The motto of Colonial Williamsburg is "The future may learn from the past" which is so true in my eyes.

This beautiful historic area is an interpretation of a Colonial American city and includes buildings such as the Raleigh Tavern and Bruton Parish Church. Colonial Williamsburg is operated as a 'living museum' and there are costumed workers everywhere you turn. It was great to step into the tavern and really feel transported back in time. We ordered cheese and biscuits and in our naivety thought we were actually getting biscuits (English biscuits). We had no idea that there were another kind of biscuit in existence! We tucked in and really enjoyed the biscuits even though they were not what we were expecting!

I thought the entire area of Colonial Williamsburg was so attractive and so well thought out. It was great fun to walk around the streets, admire the beautiful horses in the paddock and pretend we were living in colonial times!

We stayed at the Comfort Inn (2007 Richmond Road) www.comfortinn.com/hotel-williamsburg-virginia-VA142 which was great and I would recommend it. There was a store across the road selling ham for the holiday season and it was lovely to watch the locals stopping by to stock up for Christmas :-)
